Monsoon Weekends: 7 Places Near Aurangabad That Come Alive in the Rains

When the first proper shower hits the Marathwada plateau, the brown hills flip to green like a switch was thrown.

Marathwada waits for rain the way children wait for bells. And when the monsoon finally lands — usually by late June, properly by July — the region around Aurangabad performs its annual costume change: dust becomes moss, dry nullahs become streams, and the fort walls glow the deep grey of wet basalt.

The shortlist

One — Daulatabad Fort in the mist, when the climb is cool and clouds drift through the Chand Minar. Two — the seasonal waterfalls near the Ellora caves, best in the fortnight after a heavy spell. Three — Mhaismal, the plateau at eleven hundred metres, which does a passable impression of a hill station. Four — Grishneshwar and the drive past soaked sugarcane. Five — Bibi ka Maqbara framed by grey skies, the marble impossibly bright. Six — the Salim Ali lake path for herons and umbrellas. Seven — a thermos of chai at any hilltop you can reach before the next shower.

Rules for rain-chasing: start early because clouds photograph better before ten, respect slippery basalt steps, and never test a flowing causeway. The plateau's monsoon is generous but brief — catch it while it pours.
